The sea level has reached our Faculty

Since March 2019, Alessio Rovere has been head of the junior research group ´Sea-Level and Coastal Changes´ at MARUM - Center for Marine Environmental Sciences at the University of Bremen. In April 2020 he was appointed as ´Professor´ according to §17 BremHG. In November, he and his group moved to the third floor of our faculty (GEO2). We congratulate Alessio on his appointment and warmly welcome him in our building! We are pleased that the paths to "sea level and coastal research" have now drastically shortened for everyone working at the department. And that with Alessio´s inspiring teaching and scientific enthusiasm, the bright Mediterranean sun, which has been steadily rising in GEO2 for several years now, will make our beloved North German cloud cover shine even more beautifully!

Bem vindo Gustavo

Since 1st November 2020, the Isotope Geochemistry Group welcomes Dr. Gustavo Macedo de Paula Santos as a new member. Previously a postdoctorl researcher at the University of Campinas (Brazil), Gustavo has taken over from Dr. Friedrich Lucassen as an expert in the application of radiogenic and stable isotope systems to unveil environmental changes in Earth’s history. He is currently interested on how continental weathering evolved through time, and focusses on major climatic and tectonic changes and its impact over life evolution. Gustavo will also be involved in teaching, aiming to share his knowledge in geochemistry and earth system change. A warm welcome and a good start!

Focus issue "Rhenish Slate Mountains" published

The research focus of the department is far from the Palaeozoic. In teaching, however, we are broadly based and also deal with rocks from the Palaeozoic. A trilobite found by the dean Prof. Wolfgang Bach during a student excursion in the Sauerland region of Germany, brought up the idea to compile a special issue of the journal "Fossils - Experience Earth history" about the Rhenish Slate Mountains - and thus mainly on the Devonian. This issue has now been published.

Benvenuto Marcello!

Benvenuto Marcello! Since 1.9. 2020 our department has been strengthened in the research of sedimentary systems. The first person to join the new staff category "Researcher/Senior-Researcher" in the Department of Geosciences is Dr. Marcello Gugliotta, who previously worked as a postdoc at the Geological Survey of Japan and Shimane University. Marcello is interested in sedimentation processes in rivers, coastal areas and shallow marine environments and studies both recent and fossil systems. With his research interests he builds a bridge between applied topics and basic research. Marcello will also be involved in teaching and will certainly provide new impulses. We warmly welcome Marcello and look forward to working with him.

Fossil identification chart published

As part of its public relations work, but also for teaching, the Geosciences Collection has published a identification chart. It contains 80 images of the most common Cretaceous ammonites. A further identification map of the most important Jurassic ammonites was produced by the Staatliches Museum Museum für Naturkunde in Stuttgart. These are the first identification charts of a new series of folding maps on fossils, published by Quelle and Meyer Verlag in Wiebelsheim. They are compact (DIN-long format) and therefore "always in your pocket". They show the essential characteristics of the organisms treated - in each case in comparison to similar species. And they are inexpensive. Up to now, only non-geoscientific topics have been covered, such as identification maps of aquatic and coastal birds, amphibians and native beetles. The price of all determination maps of the publishing house program is 3,95 € each, maps available in sets of 10 are 20 € each. Whoever is interested in the fossil maps can contact the collection.

Important announcement: Emergency mode

By order of the Chancellor, the GEO building will be closed from March 25 until April 19 except for emergency operations. The heads of the research groups have already been informed and will regulate further matters of relevance to the individual groups. The examination office, the administration of third-party funds, the personnel administration and the departmental administration will continue to be (emergency) staffed. It will be prevented that, for example, contract extensions do not come about and people lose their jobs as a result. Laboratory operations are to be discontinued. Only essential activities that are necessary to prevent valuable instruments or computer/data clusters from being damaged (e.g. due to a lack of cooling, etc.) can be carried out. The working group leaders have nominated persons for this work, who are put on a list of personnel for emergency operation. Persons who are not on this list cannot enter the GEO building from Wednesday 25.3. until April 19.
Best regards,
Wolfgang Bach for the dean’s office and the department administration

With the Otto Krümmel Prize, the Society for the Promotion of the GEOMAR Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research Kiel supports and motivates young marine science students who hold their first professional qualification in their hands with a bachelor´s degree. This year Katharina Bachmann received one of the two Otto Krümmel Prizes worth 1,500 EURO for her bachelor´s thesis "Gas emission sites at the continental margin of Romania", which she produced in our department and at MARUM 2018. As part of this marine geological bachelor thesis, she evaluated hydro-acoustic data from Meteor cruise M142 to the Romanian continental margin of the Black Sea and carried out an analysis of the gas emissions and their interaction with sediment structures. The department is pleased about the award to Katharina Bachmann and wishes her continued success and joy in her master studies on "Climate Resreach", which she is currently completing at Wageningen University in the Netherlands.

„World of rocks“ - full success of the event in Bremen-Walle

For the first time, the Friends of the Geosciences Collection organised a weekend about fossils and minerals at the Brodelpott Cultural Centre in Bremen Walle on 29 February and 1 March 2020. The event, which was widely announced in the regional press, was primarily intended for interested people from the regional environment. However, it even attracted visitors from Schleswig-Holstein and North Rhine-Westphalia. So the small former sports hall in the Brodelpott was already well filled on Saturday morning.
