On January 15, 2025, HPC AG, Bremen office, will present itself as part of the Geo-Colloquium. Yannick Wempe, alumnus of the Faculty of Geosciences, will be present. Since 1948, HPC has stood for conscientious work in the fields of land recycling, environmental consulting and infrastructure planning.

Grundbaulabor Bremen - Ingenieurbüro für Geotechnik mbH has been working in the field of geotechnics, ground investigation and soil analysis, environmental engineering and contaminated site investigation, construction supervision and damage assessment in Bremen for over 50 years. On November 6, the company will be presented by Dipl. Ing. Thorsten Schultze and our alumnus Fabian Rill at the Geo-Colloquium. The lecture starts at 12:15 pm in the Geosciences lecture hall.

On behalf of all colleagues, we welcome Sebastian Uhlemann as the new Professor for “Environmental Geophysics” at the Department of Geosciences at the University of Bremen. Sebastian Uhlemann´s research focuses on investigating the physical properties and processes of the near-surface subsurface using electrical and electromagnetic methods.

Congratulations Elda!

At the end of a successful time as a junior professor, Elda Miramontes García was awarded a permanent professorship at the University of Bremen

In the positive evaluation, her outstanding research in the field of sedimentology was emphasised, as was her active involvement in teaching and in the promotion of young researchers. With the award of a permanent professorship, the faculty and the University of Bremen are honouring her manifold contributions. We wish Elda continued success and enthusiasm for her work.

Change of leadership at MARUM

MARUM - Center for Marine Environmental Sciences at the University of Bremen has a new directorate.

After 12 very successful years, Michael Schulz was succeeded by Kai-Uwe Hinrichs as Director of MARUM on 1 October 2024. We would like to thank Michael Schulz for his many years of excellent collaboration. Congratulations to the new Director Kai-Uwe Hinrichs on his election and we look forward to the future collaboration with him.

Congratulations also to Elda Miramontes García and Kai Bischof on their election to deputy directors.

Thank you very much, Andreas Lüttge!

30.09.2024 was his last day as head of the Mineralogy department at our faculty. From now on, Andreas Lüttge will spend his time at Lake Constance and devote more time to his family and his hobby. He leaves behind a state-of-the-art research laboratory, which he began setting up immediately after taking up his post in 2012. Andreas´ passion as a researcher was the kinetics of reactions at the interface between solids and aqueous solutions.

Changes in the dean´s office of FB5

At the beginning of the winter semester 2024/25, the function of Vice Dean will pass from Wolfgang Bach to Thomas Pichler.

Wolfgang Bach is now leaving the Dean´s Office after an eventful and successful two-year term as Dean and a four-year term as Vice Dean. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Wolfgang Bach for his great and important commitment and welcome Thomas Pichler to the dean´s office.

A friendly handover in the Geophysics Section

With the appointment of Sebastian Uhlemann as the new professor and section head for Environmental Geophysics on October 1, a new and promising chapter in the development of our faculty begins. His research records current spatio-temporal changes in soil resistivity and determines processes, seasonal cycles and regional trends in the water balance of sensitive geosystems such as permafrost soils, alpine zones and arid regions.

From Thursday, September 5 to Saturday, September 7, everything in Bremen´s Bürgerpark, Marcusbrunnen, will revolve around climate and the environment. During the Explore Science experience days, children and young people can actively contribute to environmental protection by researching and experimenting on topics such as sustainability and climate change. In doing so, they learn about the complex interrelationships of nature in a fun way.

You can still apply for our Bachelor`s degree programs in Geosciences and Marine Geosciences and Natural Science for Sustainability between September 01 and 15, 2024. All degree programs are not admission-restricted. The first two programs offer a variety of focus topics that allow you to specialize early on and still get to know the entire breadth of the geosciences.

The summer party of our GEO department takes place on June 27

When and where? at 16:00 in front of the GEO building (Boulevard)

We will barbecue from vegan to meat options, drink delicious beers and non-alcoholic drinks, and have nice music. Everything is free except beer (for a small contribution). Furthermore, we would be very happy if you bring your own food – there are no limits to your creativity! Particularly welcome are dishes like salads or other snacks for everyone. We will gladly pay the bill up to 20 € value against receipt.

Consul General of India Soumya Gupta visits our Faculty

on Wednesday, June 5th, 16:30 in GEO 4050

We are pleased to announce the upcoming visit of India’s Consul General Soumya Gupta to our Faculty on June 5th. She comes to learn about the ongoing research project on biomagnetism by Dr. Firoz Badesab, currently here as a Raman Research Fellow of CSIR-NIO. She is also interested to meet and interact with staff members of FB5 and MARUM research groups initiate discussions for developing joint Indo-German bilateral scientific programs.

Talk within ECORD Distinguished Lecturer Programme

Sverre Planke from the University of Oslo will give a talk on Monday, 3rd of June, 17:30 h (Geo-Auditorium) as part of the ECORD Distinguished Lecturer Programme. The presentation will deal with the results of IODP-Expedition 396 "Mid-Norwegian Margin Magmatism and Paleoclimate Implications" and has the title "Drilling volcanic rifted margins to understand large igneous provinces and associated global warming". Everybody is welcome!

Department now responsible for the preservation of palaeontological monuments in Twistringen

On 5 April, the "FossilPit" was opened in Twistringen, 30 km south of Bremen. Visitors can now collect snails, bivalves and shark teeth from the Miocene. At the well-attended opening event, the Geosciences Collection was introduced as the body responsible for the palaeontological preservation of archaeological monuments, acting as an official assistant to the Geozentrum Hannover.

Welcome back, Firoz!

Dr. Firoz Badesab, now Senior Scientist at CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography [CSIR-NIO], Goa, India, has returned as “Raman Research Fellow” to his former Marine Geophysics workgroup at our Faculty. Many will still remember, that Firoz earned his doctoral degree for his studies on magnetite enrichment at New Zealands’s coasts with INTERCOAST in 2012 and thereafter was postdoctoral researcher at MARUM until 2014.

Warm welcome to Peter!

Peter La Femina is Senior Scientist in the Geophysics Group at the AWI and is permanently dispatched to our department. A former Full Professor at The Pennsylvania State University, Peter has made seminal contributions to the fields of tectonics and volcanology. He strives to better understand tectonic and magmatic processes at active plate boundaries and their impact on society by combining terrestrial and satellite geodetic techniques with geophysical, geochemical, and geologic data.

Did climate change trigger pandemics in antiquity??

In a recently published study, researchers from MARUM - Center for Marine Environmental Sciences and the Department of Geosciences at the University of Bremen and the University of Oklahoma (USA) link changes in temperature and precipitation to pandemics. For the first time, they have created a high-resolution climate archive for the Gulf of Taranto (Italy) based on deposits on the ocean floor and compared it with pandemics in the Roman Empire.

Max-von-Laue Prize for Ella Schmidt

Prof. Ella Schmidt - Junior Professor of Crystallography & Geomaterials at our faculty - has been awarded this year´s Max-von-Laue Prize. The award is presented by the German Society for Crystallography for "outstanding scientific work by young scientists in the field of crystallography". Ella Schmidt receives the award "in recognition of her work on a novel approach to the quantitative analysis of diffuse scattering using the three-dimensional difference pair distribution function".
