Programming with Matlab

Lecturers: Marta Pérez Gussinyé

Content:

- Basic programming concepts (command syntax, data formats, flow control, scripts/functions, figures).

· Import/ export, analyze data and visualize data.

· Code algorithms and solution of simple numerical problems in Earth Sciences.

Competences:

- Understand and apply the basic concepts (command syntax, data formats, script structures, mappings) of the modern programming language Matlab.
- code and solve simple numerical problems in the geosciences,
- import, analyse and export data and create Matlab mappings.


Assessment:

- Matlab tasks at the end of the course.

Matlab online manuals.

Contents:

1st Day: Fundamentals: user interface, definition of variables, comparison operators
2nd Day: Fundamentals: data classes, precision, definition of vectors, matrices
3rd Day: Fundamentals: scripts, functions, reading and saving data
4th Day: Fundamentals: Creating graphics, logical operators, flow control.
5th Day: Modelling: finite differences, simple geological problems
