Earth-System Modeling Primer

Lecturers: Michael Schulz

Content:

Numerical models are widely used across all fields in Earth Sciences. This course introduces the basic concept of finite difference techniques for solving differential equations. The focus is on models that are applied in transport of matter and energy. Computer labs with examples from geochemistry and oceanography form the core of the course.

Competences:

- understanding key conepts and assumptions underlying numerical models
- basic understanding of discretization in space and time using finite differences

Required Digital Competences:

Python basics and use of jupyter hub

Exam Form:

oral exam

Literature:

will be provided during the lecture

Digital teaching:

Supportive digital teaching material available

Contents:

1st SWS: Overview of model types and their application in Earth sciences
2nd SWS: Dynamical systems, ordinary differential equations
3rd SWS: Finite difference method, Euler method, from sci. question to model, exercise: radioactive decay
