Introduction to Basic Practises of Data Visualization - GIS

Lecturers: Christophe Galerne

Content:

Starting from a dataset, the students will learn the best strategy to produce publication-ready maps in QGIS.


Competences:

Creating a publication-ready map with geograhic information systems.


Assessment:

GIS course is required before this module is taken.

Exam Form:

oral exam

Literature:

Literature will be given by the teachers during the course.

Contents:

1st SWS: Principles of Data Visualization
2nd SWS: GIS and QGIS theory
3rd SWS: Point Feature Data Visualization: Graduated Symbology
4th SWS: Point Feature Data Visualization: Categorized Symbology
5th SWS: Line Feature Data Visualization: Distance calculation using GRASS GIS
6th SWS: Polygon Feature Data Visualization: Area calculation, ellipsoidal versus cartesian
7th SWS: Visualization of animated time series using heatmaps
8th SWS: Visualization of IDW interpolated data
9th SWS: Visualization of merged satellite data (SRTM DEM)
10th SWS: Laying out a map
11th SWS: Data portals and WebServices
12th SWS: Guided work on own maps
13th SWS: Guided work on own maps
14th SWS: Map presentation and discussion
