Research Data Management

Lecturers: Frank Oliver Glöckner, Robert Huber, Ivaylo Kostadinov

Content:

The lecture will give an overview about the fundamentals of research data management, bringing order into data collection, documentation, storage and use including basic concepts of metadata description. It will address the finding and accessing research data from multidisciplinary data sources. It will show the use of scientific data portals, metadata supported search and introduce domain specific scientific data formats, standards and terminologies.

Competences:

Students are acquainted to the data life-cycle and the FAIR data principles.
Students will learn how to understand and select appropriate ontologies and community standards.

1st SWS: Introduction of teachers and overview of the content of the lecture, exercise and seminar
2nd SWS: Overview of research data management, data life-cycle and the FAIR data principles
3rd SWS: Experimental design and data acquisition, sample management
4th SWS: Metadata standards and Ontologies
5th SWS: Quality assessment
6th SWS: Persistent Identifiers (PIDs)
7th SWS: Data centers, data archiving and publication
8th SWS: PANGAEA - Data Publisher for Earth and Environmetal Science
9th SWS: Data Curation
10th SWS: Data extraction and processing
11th SWS: Data Management Planning
12th SWS: Legal aspects, licences
13th SWS: Nagoya protocol on access and benefit sharing
