Physics of the Solid Earth II

Content:

This module teaches the physics underlying geological processes. In the first semester we focus on the Earth’s thermal, gravimetric and magnetic fields.


Competences:

- Understand basic physical principles to explain Earth`s thermal structure.
- Understand basic physical principles underlying the Earth’s gravity field.
- Understand basic physical principles underlying the Earth’s magnetic field.

3rd SWS: The Earth´s Gravitational Field I: Global Gravity, Potentials
4th SWS: The Earth´s Gravitational Field II: The figure of Earth, ellipsoid, geoid
5th SWS: The Earth´s Gravitational Field III: Gravity anomalies, corrections, isostasy
6th SWS: The Earth´s gravitational field IV: isostasy and flexure, theory of flexure of thin elastic plates and isostasy, flexure of oceanic lithosphere
7th SWS: The Earth´s Gravitational Field V: Relationship between topography and gravity anomalies, example of flexure at volcanic chains and mountain chains
8th SWS: The Earth´s magnetic field I: structure of the Earth´s magnetic field
9th SWS: The Earth´s magnetic field II: sources of magnetic field, geodynamo, variations of the Earth´s magnetic field
10th SWS: The Earth´s magnetic field III: magnetic properties of rocks, induced and remanent magnetisation
11th SWS: The Earth´s magnetic field IV: Paleomagnetism
