River- and Coastmanagement Excursion

Content:

This course essentially covers two topics: Coastal protection measures and sediment management.
On the topic of sediment management, techniques of dredged material extraction, its transport, as well as treatment for landfill suitability of the sediments are presented. Criteria for landfill suitability are discussed and measures to prevent possible pollutant mobilisation from the sediment into the environment are discussed. The landfill itself and the associated monitoring in different compartments is a focus on the complex of sediment management. As part of this course, the students will visit the Ems barrage. This coastal protection structure and its applications against storm surges and for securing shipping routes in Ems will be presented during the excursion.
