Are you interested in applying to an international MSc program in Applied Geosciences, Marine Geosciences or Materials Science Chemistry and Mineralogy at the University of Bremen?

Our geoscientific MSc study programs, which were refocused on new, future-oriented topics in 2021, are now starting their third round of applications! Currently and until February 28, you can apply in the MOIN application portal (My Online Information Network) of the University of Bremen with start of study winter semester 2023/24, and register until February 25 for the required successful aptitude test at our online test portal.

Petroleum Experts Limited (Petex) has granted educational licences of MOVE Suite Software to the University of Bremen

The MOVE suite is the most complete structural modelling and analysis toolkit available. It provides a platform for integrating and interpreting structural data, cross-section construction, 3D model building, kinematic restoration and validation, geomechanical modelling, fracture modelling and more. Petex has kindly granted us 10 educational licences of the MOVE suite, which equates to an equivalent donation of £1,872,218.26 of software to the University. The Faculty of Geosciences of the University of Bremen would like to thank sincerely Petex for this generous donation, which will strongly support our research and teaching.

The festivity will start at 7:30 pm in the foyer of the GEO building. At 9:00pm the annual initiation of our first year students and not yet baptized master students is scheduled, along with a play portraying the story of our holy Lady and patron Saint Barbara. You are cordially welcome, Alicja Ostrowski!

A new colleague has joined the faculty administration as of 1 June 2022; Ms Alicja Ostrowski has taken over from Mr Stefan Siemers. Ms Ostrowski will oversee the the office of the doctoral examination board, in addition to tasks in general personnel and budget processing (including sick leave and the release of SAP orders).

Ms Ostrowski has been at the University since 1 September 2017. She initially worked in the Faculty 03 and then transferred to the University of the Arts from June 2020. The Faculty 05 is pleased that we were able to win Ms Ostrowski to work for the faculty administration, looks forward to working with her and extends a warm welcome to her.

The Faculty of Geosciences welcomes Annika Eke

The administration of the faculty has been completed by another colleague, Ms Annika Eke, since 1 October 2022. Ms. Eke takes over the examination processing of all Bachelor and Master degree programs here at the faculty.

The university is new territory for Ms. Eke, as she previously worked in the private sector, in IT and in hotel management. The Faculty 05 is looking forward to working with Ms Eke in the decentralised examination office and welcomes her warmly.

Hartmut Schneider receives the Agricola Medal of the German Mineralogical Society

Prof. Dr. Hartmut Schneider, Fellow of the University of Bremen, Honorary Member of the Faculty of Geosciences and Honorary Member of the Research Group Crystallography and Geomaterials Research has received the Agricola Medal of the German Mineralogical Society for his outstanding achievements in the field of applied mineralogy.

Charlotte Bürgers receives the Otto Krümmel Award 2021

One of the two Otto Krümmel Prizes 2021 was awarded to Charlotte Bürgers for her bachelor thesis at the Department of Geosciences of the University of Bremen in cooperation with the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) in Bremerhaven. In her thesis in the field of marine geochemistry, she investigated which processes influence the phosphate cycle in the sediments of the North Sea and found that the mineral vivianite permanently stores phosphate in the seafloor and prevents some of the phosphate from being released back into the water column. The bachelor thesis was supervised by Professor Dr. Sabine Kasten. The official award ceremony could only take place now due to the Corona pandemic.

From Bremen: new geological hiking guide about the Lechtaler Alps

The Bremen Faculty of Geosciences is known worldwide for its excellent marine geological research profile. In addition, the department also works intensively in terrestrial geology. Two new publications that have recently appeared provide information about the results of many years of field work by Rüdiger Henrich and his students in the Lechtal Alps. The first is the new official geological map of the Republic of Austria, sheet ÖK 114 Holzgau, and the second is a new geological and natural history hiking guide to the Lechtal Alps, which is currently being printed by Pfeil Verlag in Munich.

Paul Klar is on board!

Since the first of August, Paul Klar has held the new Researcher/Senior Researcher position in Materials Science Mineralogy in our department. Paul is a proven expert in crystallography and electron diffraction. He studied geosciences (BSc) and Materials Science (MSc) in Munich and went to the Universidad del País Vasco in Bilbao as a PhD student where he completed his dissertation with honors in Physics in 2018. As a Postdoctoral Fellow, Paul conducted research in the Department of Structure Analysis at the Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague on the resolution and refinements of crystal structures based on X-ray and electron diffraction experiments. He is heavily involved in the development of this new and innovative area of crystallography, which involves the refinement of crystal structures using dynamic electron diffraction data. We are very pleased that Paul will develop his excellent methodological and theoretical approaches to research and teaching in our department and substantially strengthen us with valuable expertise in materials science.

In the recently published "2022 Shanghai Rankings" the Geosciences Department of Bremen University ranks no. 31 of all earth science departments in the world. This is the German top position. In Oceanography, Bremen University ranks no. 15 worldwide and is also no. 1 in Germany. The ranking documents the worldwide recognition of our department, and his highly encouraging as well as stimulating. This positive reputation also redounds upon all our graduates!

Reorganization in the University Executive Board of the University of Bremen

The university is positioning itself with a new team in the University Executive Board. In addition to the future president, Jutta Günther, three new vice presidents were unanimously confirmed by the AS on June 15. Joining them is Michal Kucera from our faculty as vice president for research and transfer. The new University Executive Board will take up its duties in the fall.

We would like to congratulate Michal and wish the team much success!

Apply quickly now!

Until July 15 you can still apply for our Bachelor programs Geowissenschaften and Marine Geosciences. Both study courses are not limited in places.
Both programs offer a variety of minor subjects that allow you to specialize on very early while still learning about the full spectrum of Geosciences is guaranteed. While the Bachelor of Geowissenschaften focuses more on applied topics, the international Bachelor of Marine Geosciences provides geoscientific education with relevance to oceanography, marine geology, marine geophysics, and geoinformation technology. With our three master`s programs, Applied Geosciences, Marine Geosciences, and Materials Chemistry and Mineralogy, further qualification after the bachelor`s degree is assured depending on the focus of study.

Our extraordinary St. Barbara celebration rises on June 10th

Since there is a need to catch up in terms of baptising and celebrating due to the cancellations in the last two years, we have decided to hold an extraordinary St. Barbara party in the summer halfway through St. Barbara´s Day. We cordially invite you to spend a great evening with cool drinks, snacks, good music and theatre in the Foyer of the GEO lecture hall on Friday 10/06/2022 at 7 PM. Theater and baptism start at 8:30 PM.

The second and fourth semester students of our Bachelor programmes and all unchristened Master students are especially invited: For you, the traditional baptism in the name of our patron saint, St. Barbara, is coming up, by which you are officially accepted into the geoscientific community. Guest Lecture by Professor Juan Manuel García-Ruiz

The formation of giant gypsum crystals: nucleation, growth and preservation

Prof. Juan Manuel (Juanma) García-Ruiz is Research Professor of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) and currently Fellow at the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg. He studies self-organization in biological and geological structures, with applications to the origin of life and the synthesis of new materials. Juanma is an internationally recognized expert in crystal nucleation and growth with varied applications to mineral sciences but also the crystallization of drugs and proteins. His many research highlights include the discovery of biomimetic minerals that grow in shapes commonly associated with life by abiotic self-organization. Another research highlight – and topic of his guest lecture – was finding the solution for the formation of giant crystals.

Thomas Berndt (Peking Univ.) is visiting scientist of our faculty

Colloquium "Reconstructing ocean water oxygenation through magnetic FORC measurements of biogenic magnetite" on June 15th 12:15 in GEO 1550

Thomas Berndt is a geophysicist originally from Bremen, Germany, whose current paleomagnetic and rock magnetic work includes the magnetism of extraterrestrial material, nanoparticles and bioparticles. His academic career has led him from studies in Southampton, Edinburgh, Brussels and Madrid, a PhD at Imperial College (London) and the Boya Post-Doctoral Fellowship of Peking University to his current Assistant Professorship at the Dept. of Geophysics in the School of Earth and Space Sciences there. Over the next three months at the Bremen Magnetics Lab, Thomas Berndt plans to test a newly devised method for detecting different types of magnetofossils in order to use them as magnetic biomarkers of the bacterial environment in marine sediments. Those who would like to visit him (GEO 4120) or meet him at his faculty colloquium talk, can greet the creative and polyglot scientist optionally with "Nihao", "Hi!", "Salut!", "¡Hola!" or the classic Bremen "Moin!".

Miriam Römer receives the Hermann Credner Award 2022

Dr. Miriam Römer, a scientist at MARUM and the Department of Geosciences at the University of Bremen, will receive this year´s Hermann Credner Award of the Deutsche Geologische Gesellschaft – Geologische Vereinigung. This award recognizes Miriam´s outstanding research on the importance, dynamics, and quantification of free methane in the seafloor/ocean water interface.

Moin and welcome Ella!

We are very pleased to welcome Dr. Ella Schmidt as a new junior professor in the field of crystallography at the Department of Earth Sciences.

Ella Schmidt joins us from the prestigious University of Oxford in the UK, where she has been a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Chemistry since 2019. Her scientific interests are broad and focus on investigations of disorder phenomena in crystalline materials based on single crystal diffraction methods. She successfully pursues an interdisciplinary approach, combining physical and chemical approaches.

What importance did they have? The Department of Geosciences at the University of Bremen will shed light on these and other aspects on the Day of Remembrance. Popular Bremen excursion destinations in the Alps put on paper

Many geoscientists consider it a great privilege to be able to combine professional activity and a passionate hobby. Rüdiger Henrich has used the time of retirement since April 2020 to finally write down some of the newly gained knowledge and unforgettable experiences during numerous field events and to make them available to the interested public. The result so far has been three articles published in the journal "Fossilien - Erdgeschichte erleben".

Excursions are "the salt in the soup" for students of geosciences. At present, however, their realization is often only possible to a limited extent or virtually. Rüdiger Henrich would be very pleased if his new contributions were used intensively by teachers, students and all other interested parties to explore the described fascinating excursion destinations on their own initiative.

Dr. Florent Szitkar (Geological Survey of Norway): Magnetism and Hydrothermalism: A winning combination

Since the discovery of hydrothermalism in the 1970s, underwater exploration has unraveled an unexpected diversity of hydrothermal sites in terms of geology, minerals and fluids. Hydrothermal fluids drain minerals from the deep crust, which progressively form mineral deposits that could become interesting mining targets.
