Environmental Magnetism
Lecturers: Thomas Frederichs
Every sediment on earth contains at least trace contents of magnetic iron minerals, which can be detected, quantified and analyzed by specialized magnetic bulk measurements. "Environmental Magnetism" is a synonym for the very successful approach to derive source, sedimentation and diagenesis history from rock magnetic sediment properties.
This course will comprise lectures on rock magnetic principles, a lab visit and a literature seminary with a particular focus on marine (multi-)proxy applications of Enviromagnetics
Course participants understand the basic theory and methodology of sediment magnetism and are able to plan, realize and interpret enviromagnetic analyses of marine sediment series in the context of paleoceanographic and paleoclimatological issues.
