Lecturers: Rüdiger Stein

Content:

This course that will introduce the students in aspects of hydrocarbon formation and petroleum exploration, is composed of two parts:

Part (1) Series of lectures (R. Stein)
- Introduction & overview to Petroleum Geology
- Characteristics, origin, and depositional environment of source rocks
- Organic-geochemical methods
- Generation and composition of petroleum
- Migration and accumulation
- Petroleum exploration

Part (2) Seminar presentations (Students)
- Homework on selected papers dealing with topic-related case studies
- Oral presentation and discussion of the case studies (20 min)
- Written summary/hand-out of key results of the case studies

By the lecturer: Series of lectures, written handout/PDFs of all figures
By the students: Seminar presentation & written report.


Competences:

- To obtain a good overview on methods for source rock and petroleum characterization as well as petroleum exploration
- To understand oil and gas formation, migration, accumulation and alteration

Seminar presentation & written report
