Each year, the Faculty of Geosciences awards some 20-25 doctorates (Dr. rer. nat.) to PhD students from the whole world. Topics, supervision, project and position funding is provided either by the faculty itself or by one of its associated research institutes MARUM, AWI, MPI, ZMT, SaM or IWES. The thematically diverse dissertation projects are designed for a duration of 3-4 years. Dissertations are commonly written in cumulative form and consist of thematically complementary articles published in international journals. This encourages our doctoral students to face peer review by international experts and helps them to establish an often substantial publication record. early in their careers.

Many doctoral students conduct part of their research at a partner institute abroad. They benefit from this in the form of scientific impulses, language skills, cultural experiences and the opportunity to develop an international cooperation network. Stays abroad are now an integral part of doctoral studies in graduate colleges and in the Graduate School GLOMAR of MARUM. These also offer a wide range of opportunities for professional and extracurricular training.

The International DAAD Academy (iDA) has made a video of our former doctoral student Tzeng Yiting.
