Master Program Applied Geosciences

TThe bilingual master`s program in Applied Geosciences imparts technical and methodological expertise in economically attractive fields of applied geosciences. The practical training covers classic areas of application in the fields of environment, groundwater, building ground, coastal protection, exploration, deposits, and geomaterials, as well as some promising topics that are still relatively uncommon in geoscience master`s programs, such as renewable energies, glaciology, and geohazards. Specialization is possible in both the applied and research-oriented areas of geosciences. The interdisciplinary nature of geosciences is reflected in a wide range of elective courses and numerous combination options. In the wake of the structural change required by climate change and raw material shortages at the national and global level, the importance of the skills taught in this program has grown steadily in all areas of economy and life.
Program start: October

Standard period of study: 2 years, 120 ECTS CP

Teaching language: English, partly German

Specifics: advanced mapping course

Degree: Master of Science (M.Sc.) Applied Geosciences

Flyer Master Program
Applied Geosciences

- Bachelor or equivalent degree in a geoscientific subject
- At least 60 (=1/3) of the B.Sc. credit points must have been earned in geoscientific subjects.
- At least 30 (=1/6) of the B.Sc. credits are in fundamental natural sciences (math, physics, chemistry, biology)
- A 50% pass in our subject-specific online aptitude test
- English proficiency at the B2.2 level (instruction language)
- Readiness for fieldwork
- Confident use of information technology
- Ability to work independently and in teams,
- Intercultural competence

The Master`s program is designed as a two-year full-time study course. In the first year, the choice of 3-4 out of 8 core subjects determines the individual study profile. In addition to a mapping course, optional block courses teach field and laboratory practice, digital competences and complementary skills such as languages, economics or law. In the second year, the focus is on self-managed planning and acting: The "Geoscience Project" offers great freedom to pursue personal geoscientific ideas and qualification goals. In the "Research Seminar", the concepts for the own final Master project are developed, which is implemented, written up and presented during the fourth and last semester.

Applied Geophysics, Applied Petrology, Applied Sedimentology, Engineering Geology, Geohazards, Glaciology, Hydrogeology, Renewable Energy Resources. It is possible to choose courses or modules from the Master`s programs in Marine Geosciences, Physical Geography - Environmental History, and Environmental Physics in exchange for a core subject worth 12 CP.

The study course is a good preparation for applied fields like renewable energies (geothermal energy, foundation), water management, remediation of contaminated sites, coastal, flood and environmental protection, waste management and recycling, deposits, building materials, mineral-technical products, research, public relations, media and administration.
