Bachelor Program Marine Geosciences

The Earth is the only water planet in the solar system: two thirds of its surface have been covered by oceans since primordial times, making Earth`s climate and atmosphere tolerable for life in the first place: Ocean currents balance the temperatures between low and high latitudes; marine organisms bind the greenhouse gas CO2 to form sediments androcks. Marine geoscientists study the evolution, function, and impact of the oceans in the Earth system. They also address current problems such as sea level rise, coastal erosion, sea ice retreat, ocean acidification and marine pollution, resulting from shortsighted human action, and are seeking ways to manage ocean resources responsibly. The international Bachelor degree program "Marine Geosciences" at Bremen University is the only undergraduate degree in this field in Germany and is profiting from the expertise and methodological competence of leading marine research institutions at and around Bremen.

Flyer Bachelor Program
Marine Geosciences

- Attachment to the sea

- Interest in natural sciences

- Solid basics in mathematics, chemistry and physics

- Good spatial and temporal imagination

- Readiness for shipboard and fieldwork

- Ability to work independently and in a team

- Language proficiency: English level B2, German level A1

This Bachelor degree program is designed as a three-year fulltime study course. The first two semesters are devoted to an introduction to the geosciences and the required mathematics, chemistry, and physics. The third semester conveys the fundamentals of marine geology, geophysics, petrology and oceanography. In the fourth through sixth semesters followed by the practice-oriented specialized studies and specialization in three of seven electable core fields with a
marine focus. Terrain, digital, and interdisciplinary skills round out the profile. A four-week professional internship and asix-week Bachelor thesis complete the program.

Sedimentology, Paleontology, Geochemistry, Geoinformatics, Paleoceanography, Exploration Geophysics, Geodynamics

Graduates of this program are qualified for operational, analytical, and consulting activities in all geospatial industries, such as offshore industry, ports, coastal management (water management, monitoring of sediment fluxes, coastal protection), activities in marine geotechnical engineering, geoscientific tasks in local and state authorities, public relations. The Bachelor degree is also the prerequisite for further qualification in a Master degree program.
