05-BGW-CP3 Principles of Petrology and Petrography

Representative Cornelia Spiegel-Behnke

Learning Contents:

The fundamental concepts of the rock cycle, including the formation of magmatic, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks will be covered in lectures and exercises on the basis of petrological principles. Rock-forming processes in a range of geotectonic settings and rocks-classification will also be discussed. Outline:
1. Introduction, basic concepts of thermodynamics
2. Phase relations in siliceous one-, two- and three-components systems
3. Formation of magmatic melts and rocks
4. Formation of sediments and sedimentary rocks
5. Formation of metamorphic rocks

The course "Polarized-light Microcopy" includes an introduction to the theory of ploarized-light microscopy and a practical part in which thin sections and smear slides are examined under the microcope. Topics include: Introduction to polarized-light microcscopy in theory and practise, Orthoscopy: refractive indexes, Relief, Beck-Line, birefringence (interference colors, extinction, optical character, and consocopy. Optical properties and identification of major rock-forming minerals will be covered.

Learning Outcomes, Targeted Competencies:

1) Understanding the basic theory and practise of polarized-light microscopy
2) Determination of optical properties of rock-forming minerals in thin section and mineral identification
3) Application of petrological principles in analyzing rock- and mountain-forming processes
4) Reading phase diagram and conducting simple computations of phase relations
