05-BMG-PA2 Marine Micropaleontology

Representative Karin Zonneveld

Learning Contents:

The module provides an overview of the diversity and preservation of marine microfossils, the methods for their investigation and the biology and ecology of the organisms that produced them. Using practical examples, the applications of micropaleontology in industrial biostratigraphy as well as in (paleo) climate, (paleo) oceanography and (paleo) environmental research will be explored.

Learning Outcomes, Targeted Competencies:

1) Recognise, describe and identify microfossils in samples extracted from sediments
2) Understand the preservation of microfossils and apply appropriate methods to extract and visualise them
3) Understand applications of microfossils in industrial biostratigraphy and basin analysis
4) Understand applications of microfossils in paleoclimatology and paleoceanography
