Pyrenees Sedimentology (21-27.09.2026)

Lecturers: Elda Miramontes García

Content:

This fieldtrip aims to highlight structurally-controlled sediment routing and the evolution of sedimentary facies and related paleoenvironments. In the context of a progressive filling of the foreland and a westward deepening of sedimentary environments from the Tremp (Late Cretaceous to Middle Eocene) to the Ainsa-Jaca (Eocene-Oligocene) basins.
The goal of this fieldtrip is to provide students with a knowledge and
understanding of:
- Sediment transport / deposition processes in a range of temporally and spatially linked sedimentary environments (fluvial, fluvio-deltaic, shallow-marine, basin slope and deep-marine environments). Sedimentary rocks are both siliciclastic and carbonates.
- Paleontological studies including living habits, fossil preservation and trace
fossils.
- Tectono-stratigraphy of an orogen (Pyrenees)

Competences:

- Provide a framework in which to understand fundamental sedimentary processes
(delta processes, fluvial point-bar sequence, Bouma sequence, HCS sequence)
- Ability to make detailed vertical sedimentary logs in the field
- Understand the uses of paleontological data in the field
- Ability to make summary lithofacies logs at a scale of hundreds of meters

Assessment:

Field work, report
