Marine geophysical field exercise (08-11.09.2025)

Lecturers: Thomas Frederichs, Tilmann Schwenk, Volkhard Spieß

Content:

This field exercise is intended for students joining the core fiels Exploration Geophysics. During this outstanding excursion, all the knowledge taught in the Marine Geophysics module about the acquisition and interpretation of marine geophysical data will be practically applied during a research cruise in the Baltic Sea. Some of the data collected will be used in the lecture Structural Imaging. Typically, the cruise with RV Alkor takes place at the end of the summer vacation (September/October).
Various geophysical techniques (multichannel reflection seismic, side scan, sediment echo sounder, bathymetric swathsounder, magnetics, CTD) are used to collect and analyze data as part of ongoing research projects, e.g. on the glacial sedimentation history of the Baltic Sea, gas distribution, and wind farm funding studies.
An introduction to the equipment will be given on board and a regular watch and measurement operation (24h) will be organized for the duration of the cruise.

At the beginning of the cruise the students give a small talk about one method or about the geology of the Baltic Sea, after the cruise they write the cruise report.

Due to the number of sleeping facilities on board, the number of participants is limited to 7 per leg. Within the above mentioned period, there will be one or two legs for students selecting this field exercise.

Costs will be incurred for travel to and from the ports as well as transport of the equipment, but will typically remain below 100 €. Food and soft drinks as well as coffee/tea on board are free.

Competences:

Conducting of marine expeditions
Aquisition and documentation of marine geophysical measurements
Analyzing of marine geophysical data
Survey planing
Preparation of cruise reports

Assessment:

Talk on board and writing of cruise report

Exam Form:
