Programming

Lecturers: Paul Benjamin Klar

Content:

Python is a programming language with a smooth learning curve and is ideal for getting started with programming. Python also offers the advantage that the language is very popular and widespread, so that there is already a powerful Python tool for many problems.

During the course, the lecturer introduces new concepts by coding in Python using the Jupyter environment. Most of the time, the participants are actively programming themselves to solve problems provided by the lecturer based on the demonstrated concepts.

Specifically, the course teaches:
1. The basics:
syntax, data types, operators, conditional statements, loops, functions, file input/output, packages, errors, exceptions

2. Powerful packages:
numpy, pandas, matplotlib

Please bring your own laptop. If you do not have your own laptop, please contact the lecturer.

Competences:

This course teaches the basics of Python, which is also applicable to any (modern) programming language. Several Python-specific packages like numpy and pandas are introduced so that successful participants finish their first steps towards (automated) data analysis and data science.

Assessment:

During the semester, there are two small exams (about 15 minutes each). Each mid-term exam contributes 20% to the final grade. The final exam takes about 90 minutes. The final grade is calculated as 0.2*(grade_1)+0.2*(grade_2)+0.6*(grade_3) rounded to the next nearest posssible grade.
