05-MAG-AS2 Applied Sedimentology Projects
Representative Elda Miramontes García
Sedimentary processes can pose a hazard for the stability of infrastructures and may have important negative economic consequences. For instance, turbidity currents can break submarine cables, which transfer 95% of the world internet communications. Submarine landslides or submarine dunes could also affect the stability of infrastructures, such as platforms or wind farms. This module introduces the sedimentary processes that can interact with infrastructures.
The students have to develop a project that deals with the site selection and feasibility of an offshore infrastructure project development (wind farms, cables, pipelines, platforms…). The data that will be used for this project, will be obtained from public data bases. The aim of this project is to identify the processes that can pose a hazard for the planned infrastructure, and analyse the possible implications for the society and the ecosystems.
1) Identify the sedimentary processes that can interact with offshore infrastructures
2) Develop skills in project management and teamwork
3) Get an overview of the different portals and projects that provide public marine data sets
4) Develop skills in writing reports and presenting a project
