Hydraulic modelling

Lecturers: Sven Jensen, Björn Panteleit

Content:

The course provides theoretical background knowledge and practical exercises with a 3D finite difference model (FREEWAT), ranging from model conception and its implementation in the programme package to the use of parameter estimation procedures and the interpretation and processing of results.
Introduction to the basics of hydraulic modelling with MODFLOW and other modules of the FREEWAT programme package. Development of conceptual models and their implementation with FREEWAT. Topics:
Organisational and introduction to groundwater hydraulics
Concept models
Solving the flow equation - analytical models
Solving the flow equation - numerical models
Transport mechanisms and transport equation
Stages of modelling: Problem and concept
Modelling steps: calibration of the flow model
Case study
Modelling steps: validation and sensitivity analysis
Case study 2
Instationary and steady-state models
Case study 3
Modelling of reactive transport
Modelling of dense flow

Competences:

Ability to create hydraulic flow and mass transport models using the FREEWAT program package (MODFLOW and other integrated models).

Assessment:

A question is to be answered by flow modelling and presented in an examination.

Exam Form:
