Groundwater Quality

Lecturers: Kay Hamer

Content:

Introduction, definition of nutrient and pollutant
Groundwater sampling, analyses, error sources and data presentation
Processes in groundwater: chloride and salt-freshwater boundary
Nutrients in groundwater. Nitrate. Nitrogen cycle and redox processes
Nitrate in groundwater and water supply 1
Nitrate in groundwater and water supply 2: measures
Nutrients in groundwater: sulphate. Mining effects
Heavy metals in groundwater, sorption
Particles in groundwater: definitions, hygiene, special sampling
Organic pollutants 1: overview and systematics
Organic pollutants 2: Plant protection products. Occurrence, approval criteria, behaviour, findings & measures
Organic pollutants 3: CHCs - degradation
Organic pollutants 4: CHC dispersion scenarios
Organic pollutants 5 CHCs - remediation strategies

Competences:

The students know which processes influence the mobility of nutrients and pollutants. They are able to estimate the significance of these processes mathematically and thus, for example, specify ranges for nutrients and pollutants in groundwater. They are able to critically question their results, discuss them using scenarios and know how the estimates can be verified through suitable monitoring.

Assessment:

Formal and content requirements of the assignment will be outlined at the beginning of the course.
