Geochemical Tracers in Petrogenetic and Geodynamic Studies

Lecturers: Wolfgang Bach, Andreas Klügel

Content:

Principles and applications of rock geochemistry in solving petrogenetic problems. Examples: Major element compositions and liquid lines of descent. Trace element compositions in mantle melting. Radiogenic isotopes in deciphering mantle heterogeneities and subduction fluxes. Stable isotopes in water-rock interactions.

Skills:

Problem-solving skills in petrology. Least-squares methods in solving mass balance problems. Using distribution and fractionation laws in figuring out geochemical differentiation during mantle melting and magma crystallization. Understanding and using concepts of chemical and isotopic evolution of the Earth.
