Minor Subject - Mathematics/Industrial Mathematics
Bachelor Program Mathematics/Industrial Mathematics
Students of mathematics and students of the bachelor of industrial mathematics who choose the application subject geosciences have to attend courses of the bachelor of geosciences amounting to 24 CP (mathematics) and 30 CP (industrial mathematics). They will learn basic concepts and methods of geosciences.
Within the respective available capacity, the Department of Geosciences offers students of mathematics/industrial mathematics the participation in the modules
- 05-BGW-EE1 "Structure and Dynamics of the Earth" (6 CP, WiSe)
- 03-BGW-GG "Geophysical Fundamentals" (6 CP, WiSe + SoSe, 2semester module)
Based on or in parallel to the above mentioned modules, students of both study programs can choose from the following modules:
• 05-BGW-PP3 „Grundlagen der Angewandten Geophysik“ (WiSe, 6 CP, in German),
• 05-BGW-EG1 „Marine Geophysics" (in English, SuSe, 6 CP),
• 05-BGW-GD1 „Geodynamics and Plate Tectonic Principles" (German/English, SuSe, 6 CP),
• 05-BGW-GD2 „Seismology and Geomagnetism" (in English, WiSe, 6 CP),
• 05-BGW-EG3 „Magnetic Exploration" (in English, SuSe, 6 CP),
• 05-BGW-GD3 „Geodynamic Modelling" (German/English, SuSe, 6 CP),
• 05-BMG-GI1 „Research Data Management and Analysis" (in English, SuSe, 6 CP),
• 05-BMG-GI2 „Data Visualization" (in English, WiSe, 6 CP),
• 05-BMG-GI3 "Earth-System Modeling and Data Analysis" (in English, SuSe, 6 CP).
Additional modules may be taken by individual arrangement with Faculty 5. It is strongly recommended to seek advice from the Study and Practice Office FB 5 before choosing courses.
The courses from the modules "Structure and Dynamics of the Earth" and "Geophysical Fundamentals" are mandatory for all mathematics and industrial mathematics students with the application subject geosciences and should be taken at the beginning of the studies in the application subject.
Exams are to be taken as specified in the module descriptions.
Master Program Mathematics/Industrial Mathematics
For Master students of both study programs it is obligatory to participate in a first consultation with the advisory office for study affairs of faculty 5 for the application subject "Geosciences".
Students in the study program "M.Sc. Mathematics" with application subject, who choose the application subject „Geowissenschaften“, enrol in geoscientific modules in a total amount of 18 CP.
If this application subject has not been taken before in the bachelor`s program, the following modules should be chosen:
• 05-BMG-EE1 „Introduction to Earth Dynamics" (in English, WiSe, 6 CP),
• 05-BGW-GD3 „Geodynamic Modelling" (in German/English, SuSe, 6 CP),
• 05-BMG-PP3 „Principles of Applied Geophysics" (in English, WiSe, 6 CP),
• 05-BGW-GD1 „Geodynamics and Plate Tectonic Principles" (in German/English)“
(SuSe, 6 CP),
• 05-BMG-GI1 „Research Data Management and Analysis" (in English, SuSe, 6 CP),
• 05-BMG-GI2 „Data Visualization" (in English, WiSe, 6 CP),
• 05-BMG-GI3 "Earth-System Modeling and Data Analysis" (in English, SuSe, 6 CP).
If the application subject "Geosciences" has already been taken in the Bachelor`s program, a total of 18 CP must be selected from the modules listed below.
Students in the program "M.Sc. Industrial Mathematics and Data Analysis" who choose the application subject "Geosciences" must choose a total of 12 CP from the modules below.
The following modules can be chosen, with the associated courses being taught in English language:
• 05-MAG-GL1 „Glaciology I" (WiSe, 6 CP),
• 05-MAG-GL2 „Glaciology II“ (SuSe, 6 CP) [prerequisite is „Glaciology I“],
• 05-MAG-GH1 „Hazard – Risk Assessment“ (WiSe, 6 CP),
• 05-MAG-GH2 „Environmental Hazards“ (SoSe, 6 CP),
• 05-MAG-RE1 „Renewable Energy in the Earth System“ (WiSe, 6 CP),
• 05-MAG-RE2 „Renewable Energy Resources II – Offshore Wind Energy“ (SoSe, 6 CP)
[prerequisite is "Renewable Energy in the Earth System"],
• 05-MMG-CC1 „Climate Change I: Fundamentals“ (WiSe, 6 CP),
• 05-MMG-CC2 "Climate Change II: Models and Data" (SoSe, 6 CP).
Further modules can only be taken after individual consultation with the advisory ffice for study affairs of the faculties
03 and 05.
Examination achievements for the above modules are to be made in the way
as stated in the module descriptions in the currently valid version.
