Geophysical experiments at AWI in both polar region aim to enhance our knowledge on their tectonic evolution and its consequences for geodynamic models. Currently the data coverage is not good enough to provide detailed information about the plate tectonic kinematic both in the Arctic and Antarctic. One the main reasons are the difficult ice conditions in the areas investigated and here, especially, in the central Arctic Ocean. Another main subject is to provide constraints for the reconstruction of the huge continental ice sheets. The main target areas are West/East Antarctica as well as East Greenland. Repeated aircraft and shipbased missions aim to provide constraints for the former extent of both continental ice sheets as well as their dynamics.
