DeÂtermÂinÂing past oceanÂoÂgraphic change ofÂten inÂvolves orÂganic or inÂorÂganic geoÂchemÂical proxÂies, however, there is a wealth of inÂformÂaÂtion availÂable from exÂaminÂing alÂterÂaÂtions in the asÂsemblages of marÂine biÂota. MiÂcroÂscopic fossils (foÂraminifera, nanÂnoÂfossil, diÂatÂoms, raÂdiolariÂans) are abundÂant in deep sea sedÂiÂments and can provide a reÂcord of paÂleoceanÂoÂgraphic change. MarÂine cores from the InÂterÂnaÂtional Ocean DisÂcovÂery ProÂgram and its preÂdeÂcessors alÂlows exÂamÂinÂaÂtion of how difÂferÂent groups reÂsponÂded through time, and in parÂticÂuÂlar their reÂacÂtion at cliÂmatic perÂturbÂaÂtions. Changes in the marÂine biÂota may inÂvolve the exÂtincÂtion of speÂcies or groups of speÂcies that can tell us about alÂterÂaÂtions in their habÂitat. It can also comÂprise the enÂhanced abundÂance of a parÂticÂuÂlar speÂcies, or a group, for a short inÂterÂval of time (acme events). The dwarfÂing of orÂganÂisms is inÂcreasÂingly beÂcomÂing reÂcogÂnised as a reÂsponse to enÂvirÂonÂmental stress, however, I will show sevÂeral inÂterÂvals in the CenoÂzoic where a speÂcies beÂcame much larÂger for a short inÂterÂval of time. DifÂferÂent plankÂton groups reÂspond in difÂferÂent ways. For exÂample, a maÂjor turnover in both calÂcareous (plankÂtonic foÂraminifera) and siliÂceous (raÂdiolariÂans) zoÂoplankÂton ocÂcurred at the middle/?late EoÂcene boundÂary about 38 Ma. New anaÂlysis of the nanÂnoÂfossil asÂsemblages inÂdicÂates a reÂlÂatÂively muted reÂsponse, and demonÂstrates the conÂtrastÂing sensÂitÂivÂity to enÂvirÂonÂmental change in these plankÂton groups. This talk foÂcuses on CenoÂzoic ocean drilling reÂcords where the marÂine miÂcroÂfossils reÂspond in someÂtimes mysÂterÂiÂous ways, with parÂticÂuÂlar foÂcus on the EoÂcene, OliÂgoÂcene and MioÂcene.
