Research Areas

Earth system research: interaction between continents, oceans, ice, atmosphere, and biosphere; climate phases, natural and human drivers; effects on sea level, polar regions, and tropics; sediment archives; University of Bremen.
Coastal and
Ocean Dynamics
Coastal and sedimentary systems: from ripples to canyons; driven by tides, waves, currents and slope processes; deep-sea sediments and biogenic controls; impacts of coastal protection, bottom trawling, deep-sea mining; MARUM.
Coastal and
Sedimentary Systems
Earth`s water-air-rock-life interactions: microbes drive CO2 uptake and nutrient cycles; from hydrothermal vents to sediments and coral reefs; isotope tracers read natural archives of past biogeochemical change.
Marine Geology-
Geochemistry-
Geobiology
Dynamic Earth: plate tectonics from mid-ocean ridges to mountains, seafloor mapping and geophysics, plate motion and magmatism, exhumation, water-rock reactions, zeolites, resources.
Solid Earth and
Geomaterials
pplied Geology: resources and engineering; environment and CO2-neutral energy; natural hazards (earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides, tsunamis, floods); exploration, mapping and monitoring; hydrogeology, engineering geology, geotechnics, mineralogy.
Applied Geology
List of research groups in the Faculty of Geosciences
Research Groups
Partners and collaborations: 25 years of worldwide research, cooperation with host and coastal countries, leading marine, polar and geoscience centers in Europe and overseas, joint expeditions, workshops and publications, open to new partnerships.
Research Groups
Geoscience Collection: fossils, rocks, minerals and mollusk shells, cataloging, preparation, research; core since 1994 from the Übersee-Museum Bremen collection; networked databases; paleontology focus: acquisitions, exchanges, excavations.
