Our research focuses on understanding the hydro-sedimentary dynamics of fluvial to coastal and shallow-marine environments with the aim of linking modern processes to sedimentary records of any geological age. The effort towards understanding the complex dynamics in these environments is often linked to important socio-economic topics, including the energy transition, carbon cycle and plastic pollution.
Working Area
Neuquén Basin (Jurassic to Cretaceous, Argentinian Patagonia), Book Cliffs (Cretaceous, Utah, USA) Messina Strait (Pleistocene to recent, southern Italy), Mekong River delta (Pleistocene to recent, Vietnam and Cambodia), Barberton Greenstone Belt (Archean, South Africa), Wadden Sea (recent, Germany), and others. Methods
Our research is multidisciplinary and com-bines more traditional sedimentological techniques in the field and in the laboratory (e.g., sedimentological logging, core anal-ysis, grain-size measurements) with the use of drones and LiDAR to reconstruct and interpret 3D outcrop and elevation models. A machine learning approach is also used.Dr. Marcello Gugliotta
