Research Group Geosystem Modelling

We investigate how the climate has changed over the course of Earth's history by using Earth-system models. This enables us to understand the mechanisms that control global and regional climate fluctuations. In particular, we analyze the causes of natural climate fluctuations in order to assess the stability of the climate system in different geological epochs.

Working Area

The role of the ocean in the climate system, natural climate variations in recent Earth history, interactions between atmosphere and ocean involving the hydrological cycle, buildup and decay of ice sheets

Methods

The employed Earth-system models are complex computer programs, describing the dynamics of atmosphere, ocean, sea-ice etc. and their interactions. We use high-performance computers for our simulations of the climate system.

Climate models represent key components of the Earth`s system such as atmosphere, ocean, ice, and biosphere.
