Geosciences Working Group

Digitale Artbestimmung und Beschreibung der Form koloniebildender Kaltwasserkorallen

Organiser: Prof. Dr. Jens Lehmann
Location: Marum I room 0180

Start Time: 11/13/2025 19:20

Category: Geosciences Working Group

lecturer: Dr. Jürgen Titschack
Colony-forming cold-water corals form reefs along the Atlantic continental slope, providing a unique habitat with high biodiversity in the deep sea. Our understanding of how different coral species and their colony form influence reef growth is severely limited due to the difficulty of quantifying their relative abundance and high three-dimensional complexity. The talk will present an interdisciplinary project that combines the expertise of geoscientists and computer scientists to address this challenge using 3-dimensional (3D) computed tomography (CT) images of coral colonies (based on research by Jürgen Titschack, Kira Schmitt & Daniel Baum).
