Geosciences Working Group

Quastenflosser – ein lebendes Fossil und seine steinernen Zeugen

Organiser: Prof. Dr. Jens Lehmann
Location: Marum I room 0180

Start Time: 01/09/2025 19:20

Category: Geosciences Working Group

lecturer: Lutz Kaecke
The coelacanth is one of the most fascinating creatures in the history of the Earth. These unusual fish belong to the group known as lobe-finned fish, which also includes the ancestors of land vertebrates. They have a long evolutionary history dating back to the Devonian period some 400 million years ago. The lecturer reports on finds from this very long period of the fossil record and includes his own finds. He does not leave out the gap in knowledge about coelacanths in the Cenozoic, as befits a living fossil, the present-day species of this fish group are not neglected in the lecture.
