The identification of rapid climate change events in ice cores and marine sediments of the last ice age is one of the milestones of Earth sciece in modern times. The rapid transitions (so called Dansgaard Oeschger events) between cold stadial and warm interstadial conditions represent spectacular climate phenomena. For example, in Greenland these events are accompanied by temperature variations of 10-15°C in only a few decades. The trigger of these variations is still a matter of debate and reconstructing the environmental and biogeochemical impacts of these events is a difficult task of ongoing research due to uncertainties in time scales and proxy interpretation. In his talk, Professor Hubertus Fischer will present an overview of the detailed sequence of events accompanying Dansgaard Oeschger events recorded in ice cores and other climate archives with a special focus on the leads and lags in different components of the climate system. Professor Fischer is an expert on analysis of gas inclusions in ancient ice cores, which provide unique windows into the past of the Earth´s atmosphere and climate. His fundamental contribution to paleoclimate research has been recognised by numerous awards, including most recently the 2018 Hans Oeschger Medal from the EGU and the 2017 Willi Dansgaard Award from the AGU. Hubertus Fischer started his research career at AWI in Bremerhaven and has ever since engaged in close collaboration with researchers from AWI and at the University of Bremen.
