Morocco is known as a treasure trove of fossils. The regions of the Atlas Mountains and the Sahara in particular are home to numerous fossil sites. In this lecture we will first give an overview of the impressive variety of fossil remains. We briefly report on prehistoric marine animals such as ammonites and trilobites through to dinosaur bones. The main part of the lecture, however, deals with fossil brachiopods that were found in an archaeological excavation of a Roman settlement on the island of Mogador. There are no such fossils on the island and so the question arises as to where these pieces originally came from. Who found them? Why were they collected and what did the finder think of these organisms?
