MeÂthaÂne, the most abÂunÂdant orÂgaÂnic moleÂcuÂle on Earth, is ubiÂquiÂtousÂly disÂtriÂbuÂted in rocks, seÂdiÂments, soils, waÂter coÂlumns of the geoÂsÂpheÂre. BeÂcauÂse we still use meÂthaÂne as a naÂtuÂral gas fuel to run our enÂerÂgy ecoÂnoÂmies, it reÂmains imÂportant to unÂderÂstand its forÂmaÂtiÂon, disÂtriÂbuÂtiÂon and conÂsumpÂtiÂon. HoweÂver, it is also a strong GHG in the troÂpoÂsÂpheÂre contÂriÂbuÂting inÂcreÂaÂsinÂgly to our gloÂbal raÂdiaÂtiveÂly baÂlanÂce. By far, the larÂgest reÂpoÂsiÂtoÂries for meÂthaÂne are the maÂriÂne and terÂrestriÂal hyÂdraÂtes (~ 5 - 36 x 105 Tg CH4). It is posÂtuÂlaÂted that masÂsiÂve, caÂtaÂstroÂphic reÂleaÂses of meÂthaÂne from hyÂdraÂtes to the troÂpoÂsÂpheÂre (‘ClÂaÂthraÂte Guns’) are reÂsÂponÂsiÂble for the chanÂges in atÂmoÂsÂpheÂric meÂthaÂne, and driÂve cliÂmaÂte chanÂge, in conÂcert with CO2. Using staÂble isoÂtoÂpe siÂgnaÂtuÂres, this preÂsenÂtaÂtiÂon taÂkes you on a cirÂcuiÂtous walk through our reÂseÂarch on HyÂdraÂte Ridge, SanÂta BarÂbaÂra BaÂsin, north CaÂnaÂdiÂan perÂmaÂfrost and GreenÂland ice to inÂvesÂtiÂgaÂte the raÂpid rise in meÂthaÂne at the YounÂger Dryas-PreÂboÂreÂal tranÂsiÂtiÂon around 11 ky BP. The reÂsults may surÂpriÂse you as much as it did us.
