The small town of Messel near Darmstadt is world-famous. A large number of important fossil finds are known from the former oil shale pit; they are about 45 million years old and date from the Eocene period. These include the famous primeval horse, the first complete fossil of a primate from this period, but also fantastically preserved evidence of the evolution of birds. In addition to the fossils, the history of the formation of the deposit and its geology, this lecture will also deal with the mining history and palaeecology of the former habitat.
