    Deep Sea
    The exploration of the deep sea has been technologically limited to the last century. This creates a vacuum of knowledge and information regarding the geological and biological properties of the earth’s most vast environment. We must therefore strive to increase our understanding of the deep sea and human impact thereof.

    Coastal Environment
    This subtopic deals with human and natural interactions within coastal areas in different regions of the world. Hence major problems and processes occurring within these systems are addressed. To begin with, natural driven events are looked at followed by human ways of dealing with them. Moreover, coastal resources are discussed as well as the effects of land reclamation and how anthropogenic pollution changes coastal environments.

    Polar Regions
    Due to rising economic interests and the possible impacts of climate change, the polar regions are getting more and more important these days. It is our aim to provide an overview of different aspects of these unique, high latitude areas. A short geological introduction is followed by a historical and political overview. Furthermore, insights in current scientific research programs and polar exploration are presented.

    Earth Observations
    Catastrophic events such as earthquakes, meteorological hazards, volcanoes or tsunamis and impact events endanger the human population and our biosphere. Because of their potential devastating effects, they have given humanity the incentive to acquire further knowledge of their characteristics and modes of occurrence. Technological advances have led to the development of probabilistic models and early warning systems as well as diverse methods of geoscientific earth observation, ameliorating our understanding of planet Earth.
