VG3

The photo above shows an overview of section VG3. The VG3 section logged in 2006 includes strata from both Gipshuken and Kapp Starostin Formations. 51 units were logged in total (we did not begin right at the bottom, and stopped short of the very top of the mountain).
The lowermost 19 units are of the Gipshuken Formation, including among other features:
  • fluvial deposits,
  • conglomerates,
  • coal fragments,
  • evaporites
  • scouring marks,
  • wedging-out features,
  • microfossils,
  • brachiopods, etc.

Units 20 through 51 are strata from the Kapp Starostin Formation, featuring:
  • chert and limestone deposits,
  • claystones,
  • fossils including brachiopods, bryozoans, crinoids,
  • several layers of distinct skolithos (straight, vertical burrows)

Kapp Starostin strata show very clear cycles, generally of two units together which each represent a transgression and regression.
