Locations: Section VG1

Section VG1 is located directly behind the site of the field camp (see map).

Top of VG1The outcropping bedrock of section VG1 is comprised of strata from the Kapp Starostin Formation (Voering Member) from the Tempelfjorden Group of the Lower Permian. A total of 14 units were logged.

Several different rock types are present here, including:

light yellow or ochre-colored chert, often with limestone nodules. Some of these beds often containe several types of brachiopods (such as spirifera), sometimes completely preserved and in life position, other times as shell fragments. Other fossils also present are bryozoans and crinoids.

The photo to the left shows the upper-most units of section VG1 (the top of the cliff here is the very top of the mountain). These upper units consist of light-colored cherts (the predominant rock type) interbedded with greenish (glauconitic) sandy limestone beds and green sandstone beds. Brachipod accumulation horizons occur including some very large brachiopods which are typical of this formation.

Also present in this section are:
  • dark gray chert layers
  • limestone beds
  • green glauconitic sandstone
  • claystone
  • conglomerates

The photo to the right shows an overview of the entire VG1 section. From afar, the alternation of lighter and darker deposits is very apparent.
