Hydrocarbon Formation, Petroleum Exploration, CDR and CCS
Veranstalter: Achim Kopf
This course will introduce students to aspects of hydrocarbon formation and petroleum exploration, including the inverse process of Carbon capture and storage.
The course is composed of two parts:
Part (1) Series of lectures (Achim Kopf)
- Introduction & overview to Petroleum Geology
- Characteristics, origin, and depositional environment of source rocks
- Organic-geochemical methods
- Generation and composition of petroleum
- Migration and accumulation
- Petroleum exploration
- Methods of Carbon Dioxide Removal
- CCS
Part (2) Seminar presentations (Students)
- Homework on selected papers dealing with topic-related case studies
- Oral presentation and discussion of the case studies (20 min)
- Written summary/hand-out of key results of the case studies
- To obtain a good overview on methods for source rock and petroleum characterisation as well as petroleum exploration
- To understand oil and gas formation, migration, accumulation and alteration
- To get acquainted with changes in the energy sector and processes for Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR, including CCS)
