Bachelor Thesis

Information on the Bachelor Thesis

During the last bachelor-year students start developing ideas for their Bachelor Thesis, usually in close collaboration with a research group at the Department of Geosciences or one of the co-operating research institutions (AWI, MARUM, etc.). Supervised by a course lecturer each student will perform an independent scientific project and prepare a written essay.

The thesis work may be a field study, a laboratory experiment, or a project outside the university, e.g. in collaboration with industry. The thesis preparation also includes literature research, data collection and interpretation, optional modelling and simulations, and finally the written thesis. When writing the thesis, it is essential to follow the guidelines (s. downloads).

In a final colloquium, the students present and defend their thesis. The colloquium will last around 45 minutes and should be organized by the students themselves (find a date, reserve a room via the office for study affairs and career perspectives, FB 5).

Checklist

define thesis subject
find a supervisor (external supervision is possible, then usually a colleague from the Geosciences Department serves as the 1rst reviewer)
find 2 reviewers (only course lectureres, but from different research groups)
Prerequisite: at least 120 CP
Submit the application for approval of the Bachelor Thesis (s. Links and Downloads) electronically to the Examination Office (zpa-fb5@uni-bremen.de)
Once the application has been processed, students will receive a letter of admission by mail from the Examination Office
Duration of the Bachelor Thesis: 9 weeks
Extension: upon application only possible once for 3 weeks
Submission of the Bachelor Thesis exclusively as a PDF version on a suitable data carrier (USB stick). Attachments in other media formats are permitted (e.g., video files). Please remember the filled form Declarations (s. Links uns Downloads)
reviewers reports must be submitted within a maximum of 3 weeks (zpa-fb5@uni-bremen.de)
find a colloquiums date with both reviewers
register for the colloqium at the examination office (zpa-fb5@uni-bremen.de) 2 weeks before (s. Links and Downloads)
Colloquium: bring to the colloquium the form Colloquium Protocol (s. Links and Downloads)
failed? The bachelor thesis can be repeated once with a different subject

Learning Outcomes, Targeted Competencies

The student can develop a geoscientific question in form of a project under the guidance of a supervisor
The student indipendently performs the typical processes of a scientific work, like literature research, data collection and -interpretation
The student can present, summarize and discuss her/his work clearly in written form considering the criteria of good scientific practice
The student can present scientifically and defend her/his results in a 45 minutes colloquium
