8 good reasons to study Geosciences at Bremen University

You have choices!

In our Bachelor's programs, you can choose from 3 out of 7 or 8 minors to create your personal study profile. Afterwards, 3 international master programs in applied, marine or material geosciences are open to you.

You gain practice!

With us, you learn to work professionally with rocks, sediments, fossils, sensors, data and software.
You will develop your skills in scientific writing and presenting, in team and project management.

You learn outdoors!

Field courses, marine surveys and internships train geological thinking better than classroom lectures.
Excursions, field work, training cruises and industrial placements are essentials of your study agenda.

You fathom the sea!

The University of Bremen is the nationwide academic leader in marine environmental research.
No place in Germany is better to fathom the function and dynamics of the sea and the seafloor.

You join research!

A distinctive feature of our faculty is the close exchange between education and top-level research.
As B.Sc. or M.Sc. student you will contribute actively and originally to ongoing georesearch projects.

Thorben Mortimer Freidank, BSc Geosciences starting 2004, MSc Geosciences starting 2007, JD with Waikato University

Why did you decide to study Geosciences at the University of Bremen?
"I have always been interested in Geosciences. After my bachelor's degree, the opportunity to complete a joint degree with the University of Waikato, NZ, appealed to me. I spent the first year of my Master's degree in New Zealand, where I took courses in volcanology, engineering geology and GIS. This was very helpful for my master thesis, which I then did in Bremen at the GDfB (Geologischer Dienst für Bremen). There I converted my own CPT data and data from the extensive data pool of the GDfB into a 3D model with GIS."

What makes studying Geosciences at the University of Bremen so special?
"Definitely the breadth of the subject as it is offered in Bremen."

We think that as a geoscientist you acquire a broad understanding of the natural sciences and can analyze contexts well. Do you see it that way, too?
"Absolutely, the basic understanding of the natural sciences is there, and you can better think your way into interdisciplinary contexts. In my field, I have a direct comparison with the civil engineers and we say: the geologists develop the formulas and the civil engineers fill them in."

What are you currently doing?
"I am employed by DB (Deutsche Bahn) as a project manager in tunnel construction. Before that, I had several positions in geotechnical engineering / water and soil / waste / tunnel construction; I worked as a construction supervisor in tunnel construction and as a project employee, including a time in Australia in a hydrogeology company of a friend I met during my year abroad at the University of Waikato."

Which of the skills you learned during your studies can you particularly apply in your job?
"In addition to all the technical skills, I can read and familiarize myself with foreign issues in a very short time and then act accordingly."

If you had the choice - would you decide to study marine geosciences at the University of Bremen again?
"Yes, but I would additionally take courses in civil engineering: Foundation Engineering I and II."

Your final word: What is your recommendation for the new generation of students?
"If you plan to pursue a career in engineering geology, be sure to take civil engineering courses: Foundation Engineering I and II."

You are welcome!

What counts is your serious scientific interest in our planet Earth, its past, future and materials. "Diversity" is a matter of course here, you are welcome just as you are!
