Remote access to virtual Windows 10 machines at FB5 (VDI)
Prerequisite: You followed the preparations.
Access from Microsoft Windows:
-
Start your VPN client and change the VPN
server address to vpn-hc.uni-bremen.de/geo-rds .
Specify your Uni-Bremen-username (including @uni-bremen.de)
and the corresponding password for the VPN connection
- In a web browser: connect to the start
page.
- You have to log in with Domain\username: geovdi\YOUR_GEOVDI_USERNAME and YOUR_GEOVDI_PASSWORD
- Click PoolV6-Win10-np.rdp . This should either open
"Remotedesktop Connection" or offer to download the file. After
download, right click and "open with: Remote Desktop
Connection" . (For Linux and probably Mac this has to be
handled differently)
If it does not happen automatically: On your
Windows PC, activate the Remote Desktop Client (e.g., type
"remote desktop" in the command field of the Windows taskbar
and activate the RD client)
- Trust the certificate of rdlic.geovdi.geo.uni-bremen.de
- After some seconds you will see a window
"Anmeldeinformationen eingeben". If it does NOT show
"GEOVDI\YOUR_GEOVDI_USERNAME" select "Weitere Optionen" Select
"Anderes Konto verwenden" and specify
"GEOVDI\YOUR_GEOVDI_USERNAME" together with your password
- If you get a window informing about login problems with
"RDSGW2..." just enter your password again.
You should now have a Windows-10 Desktop.
Access from a Linux desktop (tested on CentOS 7.9 and Ubuntu 22.04)
- Download and install a recent version of Freerdp (from https://www.freerdp.com/ or distribution repositories)
- Follow steps 1 to 3 of the Windows description above.
- Click PoolV6-Win10-np.rdp and download that file. The file name might change to cpub-PoolV6-Win10-np-PoolV6-Win10-np-CmsTempVm.rdp or so.
- Example: xfreerdp cpub-PoolV6-Win10-np-PoolV6-Win10-np-CmsTempVm.rdp /d:geovdi /u:YOUR_USER_NAME /gt:rpc
If you have two monitors you might want to add the option " /monitors:0 "
- You will have to type in your password twice.
- It might take one or two minutes until the Windows desktop is ready. You can toggle fullscreen via "CNTL-ALT-Enter".
Access from a Mac: The following worked once on a Macbook (hint: If the backslash is not on your keyboard you can get it with "Option + shift + 7")
- Search for "Microsoft-Remotedesktop" in the Mac App store and read instructions and Datenschutz comments. If you like that download and install the app
- Follow steps 1 to 3 of the Windows description above.
- Click the icon PoolV6-Win10-np.rdp and download that file. Click the file, which should offer to be opened by "Microsoft-Remotedesktop"
- Follow steps 5 to 7 of the Windows description above.
