Dr. Brendan Reilly (Scripps, Uni California): Iceberg Alley Lithostratigraphy, Paleomagnetism, and the Plio-Pleistocene Rhythms of Antarctic Climate

For over 50 years, the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) and its predecessor programs have recovered and archived long sedimentary records of Earth’s climate and geomagnetic histories for international scientific study. Together, these histories have been central to the study of the timing and pacing of Earth’s climate events. Here I will discuss the expanded Plio-Pleistocene stratigraphy of the Scotia Sea’s ´Iceberg Alley´, a region influenced by Antarctic Ice Sheet history and Southern Ocean dynamics, recovered in 2019 during IODP Expedition 382. These sediments are among the highest resolution and most continuous sediments recovered near Antarctica spanning the last 3.5 Ma. With well-defined magnetic reversals and a strong imprint of orbital forcing in their lithostratigraphy, ´Iceberg Alley´ deposits provide an opportunity to study the evolution of the Antarctic Ice Sheet through several significant climate shifts.
