The main purpose of our research activities is to investigate sedimentation and sediment transport processes at continental margins. These include the current induced sediment transport as well as gravitational mass flow events, e.g. submarine landslides. However, most of these sediment transport processes are large scaled and long term events which cannot be directly observed and monitored. Numerical simulations enable examination of these complex processes and there interaction. In addition, these experiments are a useful tool to understand the genesis of observed geological structures as well as to evaluate natural hazard.

Working Area
Passive continental margins: shelves and continental slopes (NW Africa, eastern Mediterranean sea, Antarctic Peninsula) – active continental margins (offshore Pakistan). Methods
Numerical processes simulations based on (a) continuum model description (Finite Difference Method) and (b) numerical granular method (Discrete Element Method) and combination of both techniques.
Potential trigger mechanisms of gravitational mass movements at continental margins
