Prof. Dr. Olaf Eisen Receives the Weertman Medal
The European Geosciences Union (EGU) has named Prof. Dr. Olaf Eisen as the recipient of the 2026 Julia and Johannes Weertman Medal, recognizing his outstanding contributions to the field of cryospheric sciences.
The Julia and Johannes Weertman Medal honors scientists who have made exceptional advances in the understanding of ice and snow processes. Named after two pioneers in glaciology and materials science, the medal represents one of the most prestigious recognitions in the field.

New booklet on the geology of Bornholm published
A new 96-page booklet on the geology and palaeontology of the island of Bornholm has recently been published by Quelle & Meyer. The authors, Jochen Kuss (our former colleague) and Jens Lehmann (Geosciences Collection), provide an overview of Bornholm’s fascinating geological history – from the oldest rocks of Scandinavia to the fossils of the Cretaceous period.

Role reversal in the FB5 Deanery
At the start of the 2025/26 winter semester, the leadership of the Department of Geosciences will be transferred from Dean Prof. Simone Kasemann to the newly elected Dean Prof. Thomas Pichler; Prof. Katrin Huhn-Frehers will remain Dean of Studies. Prof. Simone Kasemann (Deputy Dean) and Dr. Marcus Elvert (Deputy Dean of Studies) were elected as deputies. The new Dean´s Office will have no shortage of important tasks to tackle in the near future; among other things, the reaccreditation of our study programs is due in spring 2028.

Members of FB05 and AWI reach the North Pole
As part of the European research project “Into the Blue”, 47 researchers and crew members reached the North Pole on September 2 aboard the Norwegian research icebreaker “RV Kronprins Haakon”. The research expedition was organized by the Arctic University of Norway and the University of Bergen. The researchers included members, students, and alumni of FB05 and the Alfred Wegener Institute.
