FirnMelt - Greenland’s Melting Firn and Ice Sheet Response
ERC Synergy Project approved for Angelika Humbert
The melting of the Greenland Ice Sheet is altering the porous firn layer at the glacier surface, significantly reducing its ability to retain water. As a result, increasing amounts of meltwater reach the base of the glaciers, where it influences glacier sliding and subglacial water drains into the fjords.

Marine scientist Antje Boetius, a cooperation professor in the College of Geosciences at the University of Bremen, has been awarded the Pour le Mérite Order. Prof. Dr. Olaf Eisen Receives the Weertman Medal
The European Geosciences Union (EGU) has named Prof. Dr. Olaf Eisen as the recipient of the 2026 Julia and Johannes Weertman Medal, recognizing his outstanding contributions to the field of cryospheric sciences.
The Julia and Johannes Weertman Medal honors scientists who have made exceptional advances in the understanding of ice and snow processes. Named after two pioneers in glaciology and materials science, the medal represents one of the most prestigious recognitions in the field.
