Crystallography studies how atoms are arranged in a material. The relationship between structure and physical properties of a material can explain why diamond is so hard and why phyllosilicates can absorb water. Normal light microscopes cannot visualize atoms, so diffraction experiments are used from which atomic structure can be deduced. The talk will explain how minerals are studied crystallographically, simple structure-property relationships, and how we can apply this to the development of new batteries and solar cells.
