New study programs get started soon

As part of the last program evaluation, the Department of Geosciences reviewed its degree programs and translated the results of the enduring evaluation process into new, expanded, and improved degree structures.
The former Master of Geosciences was given a more applied profile with more computer applications and newly added topics such as geohazards and renewable energy. This was made possible by gaining a new cooperation partner, Fraunhofer IWES. A predominantly English-language teaching program was decisive for the new program title: M.Sc. Applied Geosciences.
Together with the Bachelor`s program Geosciences, which also focuses on applied GEO topics, the department now offers a geoscience education path that prepares students for the current challenges facing geoscientists in the applied sector.
New and unique in the geoscience study landscape in Germany is the B. Sc. Marine Geosciences - a Bachelor`s program in English-language with a focus on oceanography, marine geology, marine geophysics and geoinformation technology.
With this program, the department extends its successful marine geosciences education to the undergraduate level and now offers, together with the also retreaded Master`s program Marine Geosciences, a five-year study track to become a marine geoscientist - the expertise of the surrounding research institutions such as MARUM, AWI, Senckenberg am Meer, ZMT, etc. makes it possible.
In addition to marine sciences, the Department of Geosciences is also involved in the research focus on materials science at the University of Bremen. Its Master`s program Materials Chemistry and Mineralogy, which is offered in cooperation with the Department of Chemistry, has been revised to include more laboratory practical components and allows for a more chemical or mineralogical/crystallographic study orientation on solid state materials.
The admission requirements have also been revised. English language skills at the B2 level (CEFR) are a prerequisite for all degree programs - except for the B.Sc. Geosciences. In addition, the Master`s programs can now only be started after passing an entrance test. The department expects this to result in a more balanced performance of the cohorts.
