Simon Lamb`s main research interest is the tectonic evolution of active plate boundary zones. He has carried out geological research in Southern Africa, the Central Andes, Tibet and New Zealand. Recently he has focussed on developing techniques using GPS data to understand the underlying dynamical controls of deformation. He was in the Department of Earth Sciences at Oxford University for 21 years, as a Royal Society University Research Fellow, and then University Lecturer and Fellow of St Cross College. Since 2010 he has been Associate Professor in Geophysics at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand. He has a long standing interest in the public understanding of science, and has written several popular science books, including the award winning `Devil in the Mountain`about his geological research in the Andes. He has also directed and produced several science TV documentaries on geological topics for the BBC, and an award winning feature-length documentary film for the cinema, called `Thin Ice` on the science of climate change.
