University of Waikato, NZ
General Information
The University of Waikato has been a popular partner university of the Geosciences Department for many years. Initially, there was even a `Joint Degree` agreement with the Earth Sciences School in the Master`s program. The graduate program `Intercoast` also brought many scientists and students from both sides into close exchange with each other. Meanwhile, students of STEM subjects of the University of Bremen can go to the Science Faculty of the University of Waikato - both in the Bachelor and in the Master - and do not have to pay tuition fees in New Zealand (number is limited to 3 people per year).
The learning culture in the Master`s program in New Zealand differs significantly from that in Germany. Lectures include weekly, time-intensive self-study units, such as working through, summarizing and presenting the results of publications, as well as written exams at the end of the semester. Many former exchange students found the high workload stressful, but always came back enriched and with very good performances.
Study stays for one or two trimesters are possible as well as research internships. The possibilities should be clarified amply in advance in a study consultation.
The university offers on-campus housing, for which you should apply in time. Likewise, workplaces in the institute buildings are part of the service in the master's program. The `all-inclusive insurance` for students, so-called `paper fees` (course fees) as well as travel, accommodation and living expenses must be paid.
Exchange formalities
In order to get an idea of the exchange possibilities, you should first search the Websites of the University of Waikato for suitable courses for your studies. The course selection as well as the recognition for your studies later on should be discussed with the responsible student advisor (FB 5: Dr. Ulrike Wolf-Brozio, see below).
Subsequently, an application for one of the three exchange places at the University of Waikato can be submitted to Dr. Ulrike Wolf-Brozio. By the end of September, all applications for a stay in the following calendar year must have been received.
If you are awarded the exchange place, you will be nominated at the University of Waikato and must apply to the University of Waikato yourself by the deadline.
