Kuang He fishes for magnetofossils
We welcome our new guest scientist from Qingdao!

Dr. Kuang He is an associate professor at the Ocean University of China, Qingdao, since 2021 and now a CSC-supported visiting scientist at our faculty and its magnetics labs until late 2025. His main field of research is marine geology with a focus on paleo- and environmental magnetism. In Bremen, he plans to use IODP and GeoB core samples to investigate how magnetofossils synthesized by magnetotactic bacteria vary in dependency of paleoceanographic and paleomagnetic conditions.
Kuang got to know the magnetotactic bacteria as well as Germany during his PhD work on “spatial and temporal distributions of magnetotactic bacteria in control aquaria and a freshwater pond” at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München from 2013-18. As a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing until 2021, he published e.g. on the rock magnetic analysis of magnetofossils and paleoecological factors of their abundance and diversity.
